Background to creating this program

Mary Parker Follett's thoughts on leadership written in 1924 have inspired me since I first read them in 1979 - the purpose of leadership is to create more leaders.

I had become a mentor then in my role as a financial services executive. I've been a student of both leadership and mentoring ever since.

When I left the corporate world in 1991 and set up my professional practice my aim was to make mentoring my business. I also wanted to shift people away from managing people because I had come to believe that planning, organising and controlling, particularly the latter, had become redundant. I actually wondered if trying to manage people was ever a good idea. 

In line with mentoring and changing management I wanted to do something about measuring performance because I'd seen that what actually counted in leading and mentoring was mastery of so called soft-skills whose influence and impact it seemed were very difficult to measure.

It was my good fortune in 1991 to begin a friendship with cricket coach Terry Jenner that was to thrive until his death in 2011. Terry had a unique insight into mentoring. He believed that his role was to enhance people's gifts. Terry and myself invested many hours exploring this concept.  For me I've come to understand that 'enhancing their gifts' is the number one role of leadership and that seeing other people as masters is the key to being a maestro mentor. Please view the two short videos below to learn more.

In the past 27 years it's been my honour and privilege to be a mentor for more than 1000 leaders, women and men, in over 40 countries. I've learned that there is a new management, that soft-skills can be measured in meaningful ways, and that the most successful leaders are both remarkable mentors and mentees.

Now as I approach my 65th birthday I've turned a large part of my professional practice into teaching business owners and leaders how to be maestro mentors so that  we both leave a lasting legacy and that you have worthy succession plans in place in all levels of your business.

The program

Private Option

This is a completely bespoke program. We'll determine your program together based on your unique situation, carefully select participants, and agree on a time frame.

Peer Group Option

There's wonder in tapping into other people's experience outside your own business. Three to five people from your organisation will join three to five people from other non-competing organisations. 

Commencing in February 2019 we'll meet in person for 1 day quarterly in Melbourne CBD (10 am through 4 pm February, May, August and November 2019). As is my current practice I will be bringing in some outstanding world class educators to contribute to these events.

In addition I'll meet in person with just your three to five people for a 1/2 day each quarter.

A feature of this program is integration of my materials with whatever else is working well for you.

I will also host an open forum online every month March - December 2019 using Zoom technology for 90 minutes each month. This will be time to share stories, ask questions and discuss anything participants raise.

As well as all of the above each participant has unlimited telephone access to me.
